Today we learned about conventions, which are normality in behaviors that are in usage. This did not mean much to me at first but we began to list off colloquialisms that are conventions, I was able to think of a few of my own in class too. The first convention we discussed was the How Are You(s) that people give and receive everyday. When you receive “how are you” you automatically produce the same greeting. The question does not even have to be answered in order for us to react. This is a colloquialism that is an example of a convention. In theatre these convention must be used in order to demonstrate what they physically cannot reproduce. A director may alter lightings to present the change from night to day or vice versa. Another convention that media may use is showing clouds passing rapidly and the sun going up and down for the illusion of time passing. The audience or viewers has probably seen this before and understand that there is no real time passing but they understand it is not taken literally. This is a fine example of willing suspension of disbelief.
