Today, while I was watching my favorite television show, during a commercial break I saw a commercial for a new movie release. The movie was called The Boleyn Sisters, and from the commercial it was evident that the sisters who were once best of friends had turned against one another in order to win the love of a king. They competed sexually in order to win the heart of the future king, blatantly having sex with the same men, and promising him a son. This commercial was very disturbing to me because it gave the message that women must compete with sex. This image may ripple through the minds of girls, thinking they have to perform at a sexual best in order to compete. This movie trailer forgets that women can compete intellectually or athletically. This movie reflects a growing issue in our society of an increase in violence and drug use amongst teenage girls, and just a general decline in the décor of women. Because of movies like The Boleyn Sisters, the attitude toward women as professionals in the world may not be taken as seriously. Women in theatre have often been treated subordinately, especially uin earlier times when it was forbidden for women to perform and still is in japan for certain types of theatre
